Promoting Inclusion, Social Connections, And Learning...

Within the article Promoting Inclusion, Social Connections, And Learning Through Peer Support Arrangements, Carter et al. (2015) speak about why inclusion is important, as well as ways to help benefit students with disabilities in inclusion classrooms. They discuss the jobs of paraprofessionals and also how peer support can go a long way in helping students, especially those with severe disabilities. By focusing on both academic and social skills, this plan will help students with disabilities learn how to mingle with fellow classmates and help them figure out about their own preferred learning style. After a brief intro on what the journal was going to contain, the authors moved into the steps of approaching peer support. First step is observing the student in order to help create their peer support plan. What are the strengths of the student? What are they not as strong in? How may that improve with help from peers? Are there any peers specifically that come to mind that may be abl e to assist the student? The next step involves selecting and asking these peers if they would like to participate. This step itself is pretty self-explanatory, with the possible peer supporters being able to accept or deny the offer.
